About me
Nina Gumatay Diaz (she/her) is a PhD student studying Literary and Cultural Studies in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at the University of Miami. Prior to the program, she received her MA in English and Comparative Literature from the American University in Cairo. Her research interests focus on movement and the interconnection between coloniality, migration, dance, and identity within/among/between archipelagic bodies. At UM, her doctoral research investigates the Miami salsa scene and its sociopolitical status in relation to the rest of the US and Latin America, looking at how disparities of class and coloniality influence questions of identity, representation, legitimacy, and anticolonialism. Nina has been dancing salsa for nearly ten years both locally and internationally and currently dances with Karibe Dance Studio's professional team.
