About me
Dr. Tom Zlabinger is an Associate Professor of Music at York College in New York City and a leading figure in popular music education, serving as Founding President of the Association of Popular Music Education's New York Chapter (APME-NY). With a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from the CUNY Graduate Center and an M.A. in jazz performance from Queens College, he has transformed York College's music program from a jazz-centric curriculum to one focused on popular music, establishing new degree programs, minors in hip-hop studies and popular music history, and pioneering live online performance. Dr. Zlabinger has published extensively on topics ranging from psychedelic music to musicians and music making in media franchises, while also creating professionally published popular music transcriptions through his company Dr. Tom's Charts.
