Celebrating Popular Songs and Collaboration in the Ensemble Setting

Conductor/composer Jonathan Allentoff will lead a dynamic Soundbite Session on celebrating popular songs in community, university, and professional ensemble settings. The presentation will highlight insights from Allentoff’s collaborative concerts with the Eastman Summer Studio Orchestra, Eastman Klezmer Ensemble, Brockport Symphony Orchestra, and the Flight 584 Big Band.

There is a tendency in popular music education (PME) to focus solely on training students for employment within the music industries. However, how does this vocational focus negatively impact students? In this presentation, I critically examine PME’s preoccupation with entrepreneurialism and highlight how we might resist this vocational trend.
