Pop Theory in Practice: Teaching the Building Blocks of Modern Hits
Thursday June 4, 2026 2:00pm - 2:55pm EDT
Music theory was originally developed to describe and explain the Euroclassical repertoire. While its foundations remain essential, relying on traditional theory alone to teach commercial songwriting and production is a bit like giving students an old map to navigate a city that has transformed. Drawing on systematic analysis of today’s chart-topping songs, this session introduces frameworks that expand traditional theory to include the elements, patterns, and conventions that define today’s commercial music landscape.

Voice Memo to Full Demo in Minutes
Thursday June 4, 2026 3:30pm - 3:55pm EDT
❤️ Sponsor session by SUNO

Every musician has had the experience: an idea arrives, but by the time you get to an instrument or a DAW, something is lost. Suno closes that gap.

In this session, we'll walk through Suno's core workflows for educators and students, from capturing a raw voice memo or hummed melody to generating a fully produced track with editable structure, custom stems, and stylistic control. Create backing tracks for student practice, generate stems for arrangement work, and transform an original song across multiple genres, from a string quartet to an EDM remix, in minutes. No prior AI experience required.
You'll leave with hands-on familiarity with Suno's Studio and Edit tools, a set of classroom-ready activities you can use the following week, and a framework for introducing AI music tools to students in a way that deepens their musical thinking rather than replacing it.

The MIDI Association is introducing a MIDI education and certification program to support schools and professionals, expected to launch early in 2027. Come learn how you can take advantage of this curriculum in your own institution.

With the advent of MIDI 2.0 and its ongoing expansion, the need for accessible and authoritative information on MIDI is greater than ever. The MIDI in Music Education (MIME) Special Interest Group, made up of experts from industry and education, has been working to address this need with a new training and certification program. Working in partnership with the NAMM Foundation, and with curriculum being developed by the team at SAE Mexico, the MIME group expects to release this curriculum under a Creative Commons license in early 2027. The course will be available free of charge through Coursera, with supporting documents available to educators who wish to integrate it within their LMS of choice. The course will be relevant and adaptable to learners from high school, university, and industry.
