About me
Dr. Alena Holmes is a professor of music education at the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater, where she coordinates the music education program and teaches courses in music technology and music education. She is an active composer, lyricist, and librettist, having written family and children’s musicals, over one hundred original songs, numerous choral works, and a song cycle based on Shakespeare’s sonnets. Her original musical Florida Christmas: The Musical, blends diverse musical genres with storytelling inspired by Florida wildlife and has been featured in festivals and community performances. Dr. Holmes’s scholarly and creative interests include songwriting as a pedagogical tool, world music pedagogy, inclusive teaching practices, interdisciplinary learning, and the role of emerging technologies and AI in music education. She frequently presents her work at national and international conferences and is committed to integrating songwriting and creative music-making into classroom practice.
