This interactive workshop offers a practical framework for teaching popular music interpretation when notation falls short. Participants explore articulation, groove, phrasing, and stylistic nuance through listening, discussion, and collaborative activities, developing tools to approach unfamiliar styles with musical fluency, curiosity, and respect.

Director of Concert Bands - Associate Professor of Music, George Mason University
Dr. William L. Lake, Jr. is the Director of Concert Bands at the Reva and Sid Dewberry Family School of Music at George Mason University. In this role, he conducts the George Mason University Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band and teaches conducting and wind literature courses.
